Myrmotherula unicolor is restricted to the coast and the lower slopes of Serra do Mar in southeastern Brazil (from Rio de Janeiro to northern Rio Grande do Sul). It occurs in humid tropical and subtropical forests, and coastal restinga (stunted forests on white sands) with dense understorey of shrubs and vines; mainly below 200 m. A small, short-tailed antwren (length 9-10 cm; weight 6.5-8.5 g). The male is uniform gray with a black-spotted throat; the female is brown-gray with a rufescent tail. This species breeds in October-December. The nest is cup of dead leaves, roots and filaments placed in a horizontal fork 0.8-2 m above the ground. Unicolored Antwren feeds on small insects and spiders, and frequently joins mixed-species flocks, e.g., with the Silvery-flanked Antwren.
